Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg
I started reading Psychology and neuroscience related books recently and my interest on human brain and behavior is getting increased as I get through these good books one at at time. After reading Predictably Irrational by Dan Ariely which contains series of interesting behaviorial experiments, it gives you insights on how we do things everyday which seems to be irrational at first look but mostly are predictable. To continue on this genre, I stumbled upon the book "Power of Habit" by Charles Duhigg and started reading it.
After completing this book, this made worthy read right after Predictably Irrational. In this book, author talks about habits, how they created, changed across individuals, organizations and societies. To keep it simple, entire book talks about habit loop ( Cue - Routine - Reward ). But for explaining this, author used examples ranging from advertisements to civil rights movement. And also introduced to famous personalities like Rosa Parks and unsung heros of neurology like Eugene, Henry etc.,
For creating a good habit, you need to pick right cues and rewards till it becomes routine like workout along with buddy(Cue), juice after workout(reward) .For changing bad habit, you need to pay attention to cues and rewards and distract and replace with another. Habits cannot be stopped but only changed to another. These are some of the many interesting things that I like about this book. Its a worthy read who loves reading about how brain works and human behavior.
